Abstract

Knee osteoarthritis (knee OA) is a common chronic disease and effects on health and well-being of the older persons.  Iyengar Yoga is one kind of yoga exercise that might reduce the severity of knee OA. This two group pre and posttest experimental study aimed to examine the effect of Iyengar Yoga exercise on the severity of knee OA among the older persons.  The participants were the older persons with knee OA who received treatment at the Orthopaedic Outpatient Department between January and April 2014. Mueang Suang hospital and Phon Thong hospital were randomly assigned into the experimental and control groups. 38 purposive participants were randomly assigned into the experimental group (n=19) and the control group (n=19). A 60-minute, three-per-week Iyengar Yoga exercise was implemented for 12 weeks as the intervention for the participants in the experimental group. The control group was not given the Iyengar Yoga exercise. The research instruments consisted of the Demographic Data Record Form and The Severity of Knee Osteoarthritis Assessment Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-test.

The results of study revealed that 1) mean score of knee OA severity in the older persons after performing Iyengar Yoga exercise were significantly decreased (p< .001) and 2) mean score of knee OA severity in the older persons who performed Iyengar Yoga exercise were significantly decreased in comparison to the control group (p < .001).

The results of this study indicate that Iyengar Yoga exercise can alleviate severity of knee OA among older persons.  Therefore, this exercise could be applied in additional to the treatment of older persons with knee OA to decrease the severity of the disease, and to promote physical well-being.
