Abstract

The servant leadership of head nurses is an important factor for work engagement of registered nurses. The purpose of this research was to determine the relationship between servant leadership of head nurses and work engagement of registered nurses in regional hospitals, in the Northern Region of Thailand. The study samples were 410 registered nurses who were working in three regional hospitals of Northern Thailand including Chiangrai Prachanukroh Hospital, Lampang Hospital and Uttaradit Hospital. The research instrument used for data collection consisted of three parts: 1) demographic data form, 2) Servant Leadership Assessment Instrument (SLAI) by Dennis and Bocarnea (2005) that was translated into Thai by the researcher, and 3) the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) by Schaufeli and Bakker (2003) that was modified by Suphaporn Muanlamai (2012). The reliability coefficient of the UWES and the SLAI were 0.97 and 0.88 respectively. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistic and Spearman’s rank-order correlation coefficient.

            Study results revealed that the servant leadership of head nurses as perceived by registered nurses was at an almost high level ( = 4.71, S.D. = 0.87), the work engagement of registered nurses was at an almost high level ( = 3.80, S.D. = 0.49), and the servant leadership of head nurses was positively related to work engagement of registered nurses (r = .401, p < .001). The results of this study can be used for nurse managers in developing and maintaining their servant leadership in order to improve work engagement among registered nurses for good quality of care.
