Abstract

Maternal role attainment is important for the physical, psychological, social, emotional and behavior in infants. The purpose of this systematic review was to study the effectiveness of maternal role attainment enhancement among adolescent mothers. A comprehensive search was performed on all published and unpublished randomized controlled trial and quasi-experimental studies from 1991 to 2016. Studies in both Thai and English were reviewed. This systematic review used the systematic review guidelines developed by Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI, 2016), as well as the JBI Critical Appraisal Form and Data Extraction Form. Two quasi-experimental studies met the review inclusion criteria. Meta-analysis could not be applied as these studies were dissimilar in terms of types of intervention and measuring outcomes. Instead, a narrative summarization was used.

The finding of this study indicated that the effectiveness of maternal role attainment enhancement among adolescent mothers depended on three components: 1) attached to the infant, 2) competence, and 3) gratification/ satisfaction in the maternal role. Both individual and group interventions had positive outcomes on maternal role attainment among adolescent mothers. Continuous enhancement delivered from pregnancy through the postpartum period could increase maternal role attainment.

The findings in this systematic review suggest that maternal role attainment enhancement may be individual or group based and should continue through pregnancy and the postpartum period. Moreover, primary research using an experimental research design should be conducted, especially randomized controlled trials, to ensure the outcomes of the intervention for enhancing maternal role attainment among adolescent mothers.
