Abstract

When older patients who have undergone coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), there needs to be careful preparation from the patients, their family members and caregivers so they can achieve a safe recovery at home and minimize any problems and complications that may occur. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between related factors and readiness for hospital discharge among older patients who have undergone CABG including age, gender, income, living arrangement, previous experiences with CABG, length of hospital stay, quality of discharge teaching and care coordination before discharge. The samples were selected from patients being discharged from Maharaj Nakorn Chiangmai Hospital. There were 52 older patients who had undergone CABG that were selected by purposive sampling method. Data were collected by using the Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale, the Quality of Discharge Teaching Scale and the Care Coordination Scale. All were tested with a value of Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficient of .80, .84 and .83 respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Point biserial coefficient of correlation and the Pearson’s product moment correlation.

The results of this study showed that:

  1. The samples had a high level of readiness for hospital discharge.
  2. Majority of samples were male (69.23 percent) and 60 to 69 years old (71.16 percent), with an average monthly income of less than 5,000 baht (50 percent), and lived with their spouses and children (48.08 percent). This was all the samples first experience in undergoing a CABG and the average length of hospital stay was 11.81 days. The scores of quality of discharge teaching and the scores of care coordination before discharge were at a high level.
  3. Nursing therapeutic factors including quality of discharge teaching and care coordination before discharge had a positive correlation with readiness for hospital discharge at a significant level of p< .01 (r=.524, r=.432 respectively). For patient related factors and hospitalization factors, the correlation with readiness for hospital discharge were not statistically significant.

These findings provide baseline information for nurses and healthcare providers on appropriate discharge planning preparation for older patients who have undergone CABG.
