Abstract

Suicide risks are a major mental health and psychiatric problem in the world. There are many important factors related to suicide risks, especially family relationships. The purpose of this descriptive correlational research was to study the relationship between suicidal risks of clients receiving services at mental health and psychiatric clinics and the relationships with their families. Participants included 383 clients who are between 25-59 years old and received services at mental health and psychiatric clinics in community hospitals located in the Northern Thailand. The data was collected between May to August 2017. Research tools were Family relationship assessment and the suicidality in Mini International Neuropsychiatric Structure Interview [M.I.N.I.]. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Spearman rank correlation coefficient.

The results revealed that:

  1. The participants had fairly good family relationships as a whole (  = 3.58,SD = 0.77). They also had fairly good family relationships in each of the following domains: love and caring concern domain , sharing of recreation domain ,  respect for each other domain and the unity in the family domain.
  2. Almost 39% (38.38%) of the participants had suicidal thoughts or attempted suicide.
  3. There was a moderate negative correlation of family relationship as a whole with suicidal risks (r = -.52, p< .001), and also there was a moderate negative correlation of each domain with suicidal risks.

This results can help the mental health and psychiatric personnel in community hospitals located in Northern Thailand when they screening for suicidal risks in  clients who had poor family relationship and develop guidelines for suicidal risks surveillance among adult clients.
