Abstract

Controlling blood pressure levels by reducing high sodium intake in patients with hypertension can prevent complications as much as possible. This quasi-experimental study, two groups design with pretest-posttest, aimed to determine the effects of participatory learning of family members on knowledge and practice in dietary preparation for older persons with uncontrolled hypertension. The study participants were 40 family members who prepared diets for older persons with uncontrolled hypertension in semi-rural communities. The participants were enrolled and randomly divided into two groups with twenty participants in each group. The research tools consisted of the program of participatory learning in dietary preparation for older persons with uncontrolled hypertension, guidelines to prepare diets, the participatory learning devices include slides, video tapes, knowledge sheets, and field notes. Data collection tools included the demographic data questionnaire, and the knowledge and practice test. The data were analyzed using paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test.

The results showed that

  1. After the participatory learning, mean knowledge scores of family members in dietary preparation for older persons with uncontrolled hypertension was significantly higher than before participating in the program (p<.001).
  2. After the participatory learning, mean practice scores of family members in dietary preparation for older persons with uncontrolled hypertension was significantly higher than before participating in the program (p<.001).
  3. After the participatory learning, the mean knowledge scores of family members in dietary preparation for older persons with uncontrolled hypertension of the experimental group was significantly higher than the control group (p<.001).
  4.  After the participatory learning, the mean practice scores of family members in dietary preparation for older persons with uncontrolled hypertension of the experimental group was significantly higher than the control group (p<.001).

The study revealed that a participatory learning program from this study should be used to improve family members’ knowledge and lead to better practices in dietary preparation for older persons with uncontrolled hypertension.
