Abstract

Fatigue is one of the most common symptoms among acute Leukemia patients who have been treated with chemotherapy. The supportive-educative nursing system promotes self-care ability in patients in order to alleviate fatigue. This study aims to study the effect of supportive-educative nursing system on fatigue among acute Leukemia patients treated with chemotherapy. The 24 samples were specifically selected and divided into control and experimental groups with 12 samples in each group. The control group was treated with the standard nursing care. The experimental group was treated with supportive-educative nursing system for 9 weeks. The research instruments consisted of 1) a care plan following the supportive-educative nursing system guidelines 2) a self-care manual for fatigue alleviation in patient 3) a self-care diary of fatigue alleviation, and 4) a fatigue assessment form based on Piper’s assessment form Piper et al. (1998) translated to Thai and edited by Pritsanapanurungsie (2000). The instruments quality was evaluated by experts before applying. Descriptive statistics, Mann Whitney-U and Wilcoxon signed rank test were used to analyze the collected data.

The results show

  1. The acute Leukemia patients treated with chemotherapy and received supportive-educative nursing care statistically had lower points on fatigue assessment than those who received standard nursing care (significant level p < .001).
  2. After receiving supportive-educative nursing system care, the acute Leukemia patients treated with chemotherapy had lower points on fatigue assessment than before (significant level p < .001).

This study suggests that supportive-educative nursing system is a care procedure that promotes self-care in acute Leukemia patients who have been treated with chemotherapy in order to alleviate fatigue. Thus, the supportive-educative nursing system should be practiced to help alleviate fatigue in such patients.
