Abstract

Sexual dysfunction in people diagnosed with diabetes is a common complication caused by high blood sugar levels. Nurses should have knowledge as well as positive attitudes and practice in caring for a person with diabetes. This descriptive correlation research study aimed to study the relationship between nurses’ knowledge, attitudes, and practice regarding sexual dysfunction in persons with diabetes. Participants were drawn from trainees attending the Specialty Training Program in Case Management for Chronic Disease (Diabetes and Hypertension) at the Nursing Service Center, Faculty of Nursing, Chiang Mai University, Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Phayao, and Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Praputhabat. Data were collected from July to August 2018. The participants were purposively selected according to the inclusion criterion. The questionnaires were sent to the participants by post. Eighty-five questionnaires (83.33%) were returned from the sample. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Spearman rank correlation coefficient.

The results of the study revealed that:

  1.  A little more than 70% of the participants (70.59%) had a high level of knowledge regarding sexual dysfunction in persons with diabetes.
  2.  Most of the participants (80%) had highly positive attitudes regarding sexual dysfunction in diabetes.
  3. More than half of the participants (65.89%) had a low level of practice regarding sexual dysfunction.
  4. Attitudes were positively correlated with nursing practice (r = .35, p < .05). However, there were no correlation between knowledge and practice.

The results of this study revealed that although nurses’ knowledge and attitudes regarding sexual dysfunction were high, the level of practice was low. Therefore, it is recommended that factors related to nurses’ practice in caring for patients with diabetes and sexual dysfunction should be explored further in order to enhance nursing practice.
