Abstract

Proper self-management behaviors in adolescents with type 1 diabetes will lead to good health outcomes and proceed to productive adults. The objective of this correlational descriptive

research was to examine factors related to self-management behaviors in adolescents with type 1 diabetes. Self-management concept of Schilling, Grey, and Knafl (2002) with a review of literature were used as framework. The participants were 68 adolescents with type 1 diabetes aged 13 to 18 years old who visited the tertiary hospital in the north, and northeastern, Thailand. The research instruments included the personnel information questionnaire, the perceived self-efficacy of adolescents with type 1 diabetes questionnaire, the family support of adolescent with type 1 diabetes questionnaire and the self-management behaviors in adolescents with type 1 diabetes questionnaire, developed by the researcher based on the framework and the purpose of a research study. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, the Spearman rank correlation coefficient, and Point biserial correlation coefficient

The results were as follows:

  1. The mean score of self-management behaviors in adolescents with type 1 diabetes was at a high level (= 70.26, S.D.= 12.81) of 64.71 %
  2. Economic status of the family, perceived self-efficacy, and family support showed statistically significant positive relationship with self-management behaviors in adolescents with type 1 diabetes (r = .34, p < .05, r = .69, p <.01, r = .58, p <.01), respectively.

The results of this research serve as the preliminary information of self-management behaviors in adolescents with type 1 diabetes and could be used to promote effective self-management behaviors in adolescents with type 1 diabetes.
