Abstract

The numbers of adolescent pregnant women are currently rising, and these women require close monitoring and supervision. The purpose of this predictive correlational study was to study the self-care behaviors and the factors predicting self-care behaviors among adolescent pregnant women in provinces in the 7th health region. The participants included 324 adolescent pregnant women attending antenatal care at Roi Et, Khon Kaen, Maha- sarakham, and Kalasin hospitals. Data were collected using two questionnaires: a demo- graphic questionnaire and the Self-care Behavior Questionnaire of Adolescent Pregnant Women. Data were analyzed using descriptive statics, and predictive power was obtained using a stepwise multiple regression analysis.
The results showed that the participants had a good level of overall self-care behaviors (Mean = 3.12, SD = 0.31). When considering each aspect, participants had the highest level of health deviation for the self-care requisites (Mean = 3.53, SD = 0.56). The gestational age, education level, and planning of pregnancy could together predict self-care behaviors of adolescent pregnant women at 6.9%.
Regarding recommendations from this study, nurses should establish guidelines to promote self-care behaviors in adolescent pregnant women, considering planning of pregnancy, gestational age, and educational levels.
