Abstract

Nursing quality affects life safety, severity of illness, and patient expectations. This descriptive research was conducted from medical record histories, to study the quality of nursing among COVID-19 patients admitted to the internal medical negative pressure ward at Thammasat University Hospital. The 178 samples were selected by purposive sampling from the inclusion criteria. The instrument for collecting data was developed by the researcher from the literature review and was compliant with the nursing standards of the Thailand Nursing and Midwifery Council, covering all five sections, including patient safety, knowledge and understanding, relieving distress, self-care ability, and satisfaction with nursing care. Data analysis used descriptive statistics.

The results of the study revealed that:

  1. According to patient safety, the incidence of catheter-associated urinary tract infections was 1.85%, pressure injury was 0.57% and administration error was 1.14%.
  2. The average score for patient knowledge and understanding was 96.40%. The highest levels of knowledge and understanding were regarding COVID-19 treatment, medication usage, and knowledge of the disease, respectively.
  3. The average score for relieving distress of patients was 98.15%. The most frequent nursing activity that patients received was relieving fatigue and discomfort.
  4. The average score for self-care ability for patients was 98.59%. The highest frequency of nursing care was for the Activities of Daily Living and discharge planning.
  5. The average score for patient satisfaction with nursing care was 96.19%, which was at a high level. Considering each aspect, the highest satisfaction score was for overall nursing services, followed by providing information, and patient rights.

The results of this study show that during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak, nurses were particularly important for applying standards of nursing to efficient practice which affected quality of nursing care and patient satisfaction.
