Abstract

The impact of disease on health status is an important indicator of quality of life for persons living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This study aimed: 1) to examine the impact of disease on the health status of persons with COPD, and 2) to examine the relationships between the impact of disease on health status and selected factors, including time to diagnosis, comorbidity, severity of illness, tobacco use, and nutritional status. The participants were comprised of 168 individuals with COPD who had visited the COPD clinic at the Central Chest Institute of Thailand. Instruments used for collecting data included a demographic data form, medical records, and the COPD Assessment Test (CAT), which measures health-related quality of life in COPD patients. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and the Spearman rank-order correlation coefficient.
The results showed that 61.3% of the participants had a moderate impact of disease on their health status. In addition, the impact of disease on health status had a small positive significant correlation with comorbidity (rs =.155, p < .05) and a small negative significant correlation with nutritional status (rs = -.263, p < .01), but did not correlate significantly with time to diagnosis, severity of illness, or tobacco use.
The results of this study indicate that managing nutritional status and controlling comorbidity would be helpful in promoting quality of life among persons with COPD.
