Abstract

Professional nurses’ practice in providing palliative care is nursing practice for people with a seriously ill patient, in order to relieve suffering from severe symptoms and treatment, and to promote care which satisfies physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs. This descriptive research aimed to examine nurses' practice in providing palliative care for patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) who were eligible for palliative care. The participants comprised 326 professional nurses who worked at medical wards of eight hospitals in Health Region 4. Research instruments were composed of 1) a demographic form and 2) a questionnaire about nursing behavior in providing palliative care for COPD patients (QNBPC-COPD) with a reliability coefficient (Cronbach's alpha) of 0.94. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics
The results showed that nurses' caring behaviors in providing palliative care for COPD patients were at a moderate level (M = 128.80, SD = 26.01). Regarding each dimension, 1) the physical care mean score was at a moderate level (M = 58.07, SD = 13.01), with the lowest score for the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS); 2) psychosocial care was at a moderate level (M = 42.07, SD = 8.42), with the lowest score for pain and discomfort management; and 3) spiritual care was at a moderate level (M = 28.65, SD = 6.39), with the lowest score for identifying beliefs, something of value, and meaning in life for providing spiritual care.
The results of this research can be used as information for policymakers and administrators of hospitals in Health Region 4 to improve the quality of palliative care health services for registered nurses with COPD patients. Further research should explore ways to develop and improve nurses' palliative care behaviors.
