Abstract

Self-management among older persons with congestive heart failure is rather complex. Therefore, the ability to control the disease’s symptoms requires adequate health literacy. This correlational descriptive research aimed to examine health literacy, self-management, and the relationship between health literacy and self-management among older persons with congestive health failure. Participants were older persons with congestive heart failure who visited a heart failure clinic at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital. The 84 participants were selected using convenience sampling during September to November 2021. The research instruments used in this study included a demographic data recording form, and a health literacy and self-management behaviors scale for older persons with congestive heart failure. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Spearman’s rank correlation.
The results indicated that participants’ health literacy and self-management were at high levels. Health literacy had a positive relationship with self-management at a high level with statistical significance (r = .70, p < .01).
The results from this study demonstrate the benefits for healthcare providers in encouraging health literacy and self-management among older persons with congestive heart failure.
