Abstract

Highly expressed emotion is one cause for relapse in persons with schizophrenia. The purpose of this experimental research was to evaluate the effect of the Psychiatric Family Caregiving Program on the expressed emotions of caregivers of persons with schizophrenia living in a community. Twenty-four primary caregivers were purposively recruited at a psychiatric hospital. The samples were grouped using the matching technique in terms of the gender of the caregiver, the age and the number of hospitalizations for persons with schizophrenia, and simple random sampling to assign participants equally to an experimental group (n = 12) or a control group (n = 12). Three participants dropped out and ten remained for the experimental group with eleven for the control group. There were two types of instruments: 1) the data collection tools consisted of personal questionnaires and the Family Questionnaire (FQ); and 2) the intervention tool consisted of The Psychiatric Family Caregiving Program, with an expressed emotion focus, which consisted of activities over 6 weeks, once a week. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, and one-way repeated ANOVA.
             The results were as follows:
             1. Expressed emotion scores for the experimental group at the one-month follow-up period were statistically significantly lower than those before receiving the program (F = 6.076, p < 0.05).
             2. Expressed emotion scores for the experimental group at the one-month follow-up period were statistically significantly lower than those for the control group (t = -1.757, p < 0.05).
The expressed emotion of caregivers affected the persons with schizophrenia; therefore, psychiatric hospitals should enhance caregivers to express appropriate emotions.
