Abstract

Decreased physical activity is a common problem in older persons with knee osteoarthritis stage III. This study aimed to examine body mass index (BMI), severity of osteoarthritis, self-efficacy, and physical activity, and the relationship between these factors. The sample included 85 older persons with knee osteoarthritis stage III living in Chun district, Phayao Province. Purposive sampling was applied to select the participants. Data collection was done through instruments consisting of the demographic and illness recording form, the BMI recording form, the Oxford Knee Scale (OKS), the self-efficacy for physical activity questionnaire, and the short form of the physical activity questionnaire (IPAQ-SF). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson's correlation coefficient.
The results of this study were as follows:
        1. More than half of older persons with knee osteoarthritis stage III had physical activity at a low level (56.50%). Considering each pattern of physical activity, it was found that all subjects engaged in walking (100%), followed by moderate-intensity activities (68.24%) and vigorous-intensity activities (24.71%)
           2. About two-thirds of older persons with knee osteoarthritis stage III had BMI at an overweight level (65.90 %). Regarding severity of knee osteoarthritis, over half had a severe level (57.60%). Less than half of older persons had self-efficacy for physical activity at a high level (47.00%).
       3. BMI, severity of knee osteoarthritis, and self-efficacy had a statistically significantly correlation with physical activity (r = -.423, .686, .693, p < 0.01).
The results of this research will be useful for healthcare professionals working in both hospitals and communities in order to promote appropriate physical activity for older persons with knee osteoarthritis stage III.
