Abstract

The infection rate of COVID-19 in school-age children is increasing and is likely high because of school reopening. This descriptive correlational research aimed to study COVID-19 preventive behaviors and the relationship of the modifying factors, individual beliefs, and cues to action with COVID-19 preventive behaviors. The sample of 306 school-age (10-12 years old) 4th–6th grade children was selected using stratified random sampling based on school and study classes. Questionnaires were used as research tools for data collection. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Spearman’s correlation coefficient.
The results showed that the COVID-19 preventive behaviors of school-age students was at a moderate level (= 17.81, SD = 4.84). Knowledge of COVID-19 was related to COVID-19 preventive behaviors of school-age children with statistical significance (p < .05). Perceived self-efficacy for preventive behavior, perceived benefit of COVID-19 preventive behavior, perceived susceptibility to COVID-19, and perceived severity of COVID-19 had a positive relationship with COVID-19 preventive behavior (r = .599, .450, .351, .260, p < .001, respectively), but perceived barrier of COVID-19 had a negative relationship with COVID-19 preventive behavior (-.233, p < .001). It was found that receiving information on COVID-19 prevention and interpersonal relations had a positive relationship with COVID-19 preventive behavior (r = .463, .354, p < .001).
The finding in this study should provide the basic information for creating a program to give adequate knowledge and promote self-efficacy to effectively enhance behavior in COVID-19 prevention and control of the COVID-19 pandemic among school-age students.
