Abstract

Low rates of adherence to medication behaviors are expected among persons with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Health literacy may influence engagement in adherence to medication behaviors. This descriptive correlational study aimed to examine the relationship between health literacy and medication adherence among COPD patients. The sample included 120 ethnic minority participants with COPD in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture. Research instruments included 1) a demographic information form; 2) the Chinese version of the Functional, Communicative, and Critical Health Literacy Scale (FCCHL); and 3) the Medication Adherence Scale and Inhaler Adherence Scale (MAS and IAS). The Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of the Chinese version of the FCCHL for each component were 0.82-0.84, and the Medication Adherence Scale and Inhaler Adherence Scale correlation coefficient (r) values were 0.83. Using descriptive statistics and Spearman's rank-order correlation, the data were analyzed.

The results demonstrated that the overall comprehensive health literacy mean score was 11.58 (SD = 3.86), and the average of overall medication adherence was 5.69 (SD = 2.70). Total health literacy strongly correlated with medication adherence (r = .589, p < 0.01).

The results of this research provide baseline information regarding the association between health literacy and oral and inhaled medication adherence among Chinese people with COPD.
