Abdominal obesity increases the risk of diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and cardiovascular disease. Promoting health literacy is, therefore, essential for changing health behaviors to reduce body mass index and waist circumference, and prevent complications from abdominal obesity. This two-group quasi-experimental research aimed to investigate the effects of a health literacy promotion program on abdominal obesity management among individuals with abdominal obesity in Kaeng Khro district, Chaiyaphum. The 60 participants were divided into a control group and an experimental group, each with 30 participants selected by simple random sampling. The research instruments were 1) a health literacy promotion program on abdominal obesity management, 2) a tool to measure clinical outcomes, and 3) a data collection tool, including a personal infor- mation questionnaire, a health literacy on abdominal obesity management questionnaire, and an abdominal obesity reduction behaviors questionnaire. The reliability coefficients were reported as 0.81 and 0.85, respectively. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, paired t-test, and independent t-test.
The results showed that after participating in the program, the experimental group demonstrated significantly better outcomes compared to their baseline measurements and those of the control group. Specifically, they showed higher scores in health literacy and obesity reduction behaviors, while also achieving greater improvements in clinical measures. Their body mass index and waist circumference decreased with statistical significance compared to their pre-program measurements and the control group's measurements (p < .05).
The findings support integrating health literacy interventions into abdominal obesity management programs. Further research should investigate long-term outcomes and implement-tation strategies.
