Abstract

School-aged children are at risk for dental caries which has both physical and mental effects on this group including effects on learning and quality of life. This quasi-experimental research, with a two-group pretest-posttest design, aimed to study the effect of the planned behavior enhancing program on dental decay prevention behaviors in late school-age children. The participants were 40 students aged 9-12 years from grades 4 to 6 in Saraphi district, Chiang Mai province. They were recruited using purposive sampling and assigned to an experimental group (n = 20) or a control group (n = 20). The research instruments consisted of 1) the 5-week planned behavior enhancing program on dental decay prevention behaviors; 2) media and a guidebook; and 3) a questionnaire on dental decay prevention behavior which was verified for content accuracy by six experts, demonstrating a content validity index of 1.00 and a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.73. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, paired sample t-test, and independent t-test.

The results showed that the experimental group had significantly higher mean scores for dental decay prevention behaviors (M = 35.90, SD = 3.26) than before receiving the planned behavior enhancing program (M = 31.45, SD = 2.89, t = -5.784, p < 0.001) and significantly higher than those of the control group (M = 32.30, SD = 2.58, t = 3.875, p < 0.001).

The results of this study can be used as guidelines for community nurse practitioners, health care teams, and school health teams to encourage late school-age children to change their behaviors to prevent tooth decay and reduce the incidence of dental decay in this population.
