Abstract

Currently, education management encourages teachers to use educational innovations to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of teaching and learning. This research and development (R&D) study aimed to develop a portable childbirth simulation box and evaluate nursing students' perceptions of its use. The study was conducted with 136 nursing students from the School of Nursing, Panyapiwat Institute of Management, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a general information questionnaire and a perception assessment questionnaire regarding the use of the childbirth simulation box, which demonstrated an index of Item-Objective Congruence (IOC) between 0.67-1.00 and a reliability value, calculated by Cronbach alpha's coefficient, equal to 0.90. Descriptive statistics were used for data analysis.

The developed innovation consisted of a compact childbirth simulation box designed for teaching childbirth mechanisms and vaginal delivery training. The box structure and rotating axis mechanism are made of stainless steel (Grade 304), with a handle and a lockable lid. Inside the box, a silicone-based female external genitalia model and a male neonatal model were included. The results indicated that students had a highly positive perception of the innovation (Mean = 4.82, SD = 0.42). The highest-rated aspects were the product’s modern design and its ability to engage learners (Mean = 4.86, SD = 0.37) and its alignment with course content and learning activities (Mean = 4.93, SD = 0.26).

Findings suggest that the portable childbirth simulation box should be integrated into maternal and newborn nursing courses, particularly in the topics of childbirth mechanisms and normal delivery, for both theoretical and practical training. This would enhance students' understanding and hands-on experience before engaging in real clinical practice.
