Dementia preventive behaviors in older adults with chronic diseases are important in helping to delay the onset of dementia. This predictive correlational study aimed to determine the factors influencing dementia preventive behaviors among older adults with chronic diseases in rural communities. The participants consisted of 140 older adults with chronic diseases at risk for dementia in one province. Participants were recruited using multistage random sampling. A questionnaire assessed 1) demographic data, 2) knowledge of dementia, 3) perceived susceptibility of dementia, 4) perceived severity of dementia, 5) perceived benefits of dementia prevention, 6) perceived barriers of dementia prevention, 7) perceived self-efficacy of dementia prevention, 8) social support, and 9) dementia preventive behaviors. The content validity and reliability of the research instruments were approved. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression.
The research results found that the overall dementia preventive behaviors of the older adults with chronic diseases were at a moderate level (M = 2.24, SD = .27). The factors influencing dementia preventive behaviors included perceived self-efficacy of dementia prevention (ß = .378, p < .001), knowledge of dementia (ß = .260, p < .001), and perceived susceptibility of dementia (ß = .184, p < .05). These factors could significantly predict 29.90% of the variance in dementia preventive behaviors (R2 = .299, F = 7.968, p < .05).
Health care providers should develop programs to promote knowledge and perceived susceptibility, and increase perceived self-efficacy of preventing dementia in older adults with chronic diseases in rural communities.
