Abstract

Adolescents with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) can effectively control a relapse of the disease, and improve quality of life, by performing proper self-care behaviors. This two-group quasi-experimental study aimed to compare self-care behaviors of adolescents with SLE between an experimental group and a control group. The participants, purposively selected, were 48 adolescents aged 10 to 19 years with SLE who sought treatment at the pediatric nephrology and rheumatology clinic at a university hospital. Participants were divided into the control group and the experimental group by matching to ensure similar characteristics. The experimental group received the supportive-educative nursing program, whereas the control group received standard nursing care. Research instruments included the supportive-educative nursing program and a self-care behavior assessment questionnaire for adolescents with SLE. Analysis of data used descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney U test, and Wilcoxon matched pairs signed-rank test.

The results revealed that the experimental group had statistically significant higher mean scores for self-care behavior after the program (Z = -4.288, p < .05). The experimental group also showed statistically significant higher mean scores for self-care behavior than those of the control group (Z = -3.336, p < .05).

The study’s findings indicate that the supportive-educative nursing program successfully improved self-care behaviors among adolescents with SLE. Therefore, nurses who provide care for this group may use the program as a guideline to promote their self-care behaviors.
