การจัดการลดอุณหภูมิร่างกายตามเป้าหมายเป็นการรักษาที่มีผลลัพธ์ดีสำหรับผู้ป่วยที่มีภาวะหัวใจหยุดเต้นภายหลังจากการไหลเวียนโลหิตกลับคืนมาแล้วแต่ยังไม่รู้สึกตัว เป้าหมายการรักษานี้เพื่อปกป้องสมองและหัวใจ การรักษามีหลักการและขั้นตอนสำคัญ ได้แก่ ทำให้อุณหภูมิร่างกายลดลงโดยเร็วในระยะการชักนำสู่อุณหภูมิเป้าหมาย ควบคุมอุณหภูมิร่างกายให้คงที่ในระยะคงอุณหภูมิอยู่ในระดับเป้าหมาย และเพิ่มอุณหภูมิร่างกายอย่างช้าๆ ในระยะเพิ่มอุณหภูมิกลับสู่ปกติ อย่างไรก็ตามการรักษาอาจทำให้เกิดภาวะแทรกซ้อนได้หลากหลายในทุกระยะ พยาบาลจึงมีบทบาทสำคัญในการประเมินติดตาม ป้องกัน และจัดการภาวะแทรกซ้อนเหล่านั้น การดูแลอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพจะทำให้ผู้ป่วยรอดชีวิต มีการทำหน้าที่ระบบประสาทดีขึ้น รวมทั้งความพึงพอใจต่อคุณภาพการดูแลของผู้ป่วยและครอบครัวอาจเพิ่มขึ้นด้วย
