สืบเนื่องจากปัญหาการขาดแคลนพยาบาลและอาจารย์พยาบาลในการสอนนักศึกษา นักวิชาการจึงแสวงหาวิธีการใหม่ๆเพื่อปรับปรุงและแก้ไขปัญหาที่เกิดขึ้น ด้วยการสร้างระบบพี่เลี้ยงโดยให้พยาบาลอาวุโสที่มีความรู้และประสบการณ์ในวิชาชีพได้ทำหน้าที่พี่เลี้ยงผู้ซึ่งเป็นแบบอย่างที่ดีและถ่ายทอดประสบการณ์ในวิชาชีพโดยการสอนงานให้แก่พยาบาลหลายกลุ่มซึ่งเป็นผู้ต้องการพัฒนาตนเอง และพบว่าวิธีการเหล่านี้สามารถใช้ได้ผลดีในการพัฒนาการพยาบาลด้านต่าง ๆในวิชาชีพ อีกทั้งยังช่วยในการพัฒนาคุณธรรมและความเป็นนักวิชาการรวมทั้งเพิ่มการคงอยู่ในงานของพยาบาลอีกด้วย
