The objectives of this research were 1) to analyze the current situation of diabetes in Tha Sap Subdistrict, Mueang District of Yala province, Thailand and 2) to present the development guidelines to care for diabetes patients in Tha Sap Subdistrict. The sample group comprised 50 diabetes patients in Tha Sap Subdistrict that were collected by purposive sampling. The survey validity was assessed by Cronbach’s alpha coefficient and the result was .82. The qualitative data was collected from the five participants via a recorded in-depth interview in May-August 2021. The data analysis included the percentage, mean, standard deviation, and content analysis. The results were as follows:
According to the current situation of diabetes in Tha Sap Subdistrict, the sickness duration of the patients was 1-4 years or 52.0%, blood sugar level (DTX) was 201-300 mg% or 44.0%, and the visual side effects were 36%. Furthermore, every patient had learned basic self-care from the health team at least once, and the self-care behavior was at a good level ( =3.52; SD= .35).
The development guidelines to care for diabetes patients in Tha Sap Subdistrict consisted of four aspects as follows: 1) The patients put their religious faith into healthcare, 2) the family enhanced their knowledge and education by promoting the family members to take part in food management regarding the specific diseases, 3) the community promoted the participation of the religious leaders to make a plan for diabetes patients, and 4) the education supported the academics/knowledge in promoting the patterns and guidelines for self-care that would conform to the context of the patients and the community.
The results of this research provided policy recommendations for developing the care of diabetes patients in the Tha Sap Community.
