A Study of Food Security of the Elderly at Bann Hin-Phud, Hat Yai District, Songkhla

This descriptive correlational study aimed to examine food security and investigate factors related to food security among the elderly living at Bann Hin-Phud, Hat Yai District, and Songkhla. The samples included purposively selected 100 older adults aged 60 years and older. Data were collected by using questionnaires containing 1) 12 items with optional answers for assessing personal data and family data, 2) 11 items asking about social supports, and 3) 20 items asking about food security. The questionnaires were validated by 3 experts and the index of congruence ranged between 0.60-1.00. The reliability of the questionnaires, measured with Cronbach’s Alpha Coefficient, was 0.76. Data were analyzed for percentages, means, standard deviations; Chi-square test and Spearman–Rank were used for correlation analysis.
The study revealed that food security among the elderly living at Bann Hin-Phud, Hat Yai District, Songkhla was in a low level; the elderly’s income, eating style, disease (hyperlipidemia), a number of family members, caregiver in charging for the family’s expenses, and eating style were significantly associated with food security (X2 = 4.35 -35.00; p <0.05). Social supports were significantly associated with food security (r = .89; p< 0.05.)
