Abstract

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to examine the health literacy and factors related to health literacy among pre-aging people (aged 45-59 years) in Sapphaya District, Chainat Province in Thailand. The study was performed with a quantitative approach and a sample group of 315 pre-aging people. The research instrument was a questionnaire approved by three experts with a consistency index of .67-1.00. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis.

The research results revealed that most of the participants had health literacy at a fair level (69.2%). The factors that were found to be related to health literacy, with a statistical significance of 0.05 in the pre-aging population of Sapphaya area, were education level, financial status, family relationships and health services. All dependent variables could explain the variance of health literacy as 42.6% (R2 = 0.426). The results indicated that the health care organizations and healthcare providers in communities should promote health literacy in pre-aging populations. Applying proactive healthcare services improves the health information accessibility, and having a process to promote health literacy in each stage contributes to the health behavior changes and preparation for becoming quality elderly people.
