Abstract

The objective of this descriptive research was to study the total amount of the patients’ nursing care needs among all types of patients in the Nursing Department, Kra Buri Hospital, Ranong Province, Thailand. This study used direct and non-direct nursing practices and determined the number of nursing personnel that should be available based on the nursing care needs. The total population of the study comprised the registered nurses and staff in the Nursing Department (N=48). The research instruments were composed of a service record from the nursing personnel and direct and non-direct nursing practice record form of each patient type. The instruments were validated by three experts. The item-objective congruence (IOC) index was 0.66-1.00. The consistency index was equal to .93 The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including percentage, mean, and standard deviation.

The results of this research were as follows: 1) The average of the nursing needs was 4.98 hours/patient/day. 2) The nursing personnel capacity based on the nursing care needs was 54 nursing staff according to the Nursing Department’s formula and consisted of 18 nursing staff, but also included 11 professional nurses and seven nurses aides according to the human resource framework of a community hospital of the Ministry of Public Health, Thailand. 3) In comparing the nursing staffing levels according to the nursing needs, the calculation formula of the Nursing Department and framework of the administration structure of a community hospital of the Ministry of Public Health showed no difference.

The results of this study indicated that there was an imbalance between the number of nursing personnel that should be available based on the nursing care needs and the human resource framework according to the administrative structure of community hospitals. Therefore, the Nursing Department should plan for human resource management and assign tasks to suit the workload in each division.
