Relationship Between Health Literacy and Health Behavior Among Risk Group with Hypertension in Koh-Samui, Surat Thani Province

Abstract

This descriptive research aimed to 1) study level of health literacy among risk group with hypertension, Koh-Samui district, Surat Thani province, 2) study level of health behavior among risk group with hypertension, Koh-Samui district, Surat Thani province and 3) study relationship between health behavior and health literacy among risk group with hypertension, Koh-Samui district, Surat Thani province. Study was implemented from August, 1 to October, 31, 2022. Population were 469 people, aged over 35 years, having blood pressure between 120/80 and 139/89 mmHg, living in Koh-Samui district, Surat Thani province. 210 Sample were drawn using table of sample size determination (Krejcie and Morgan), Data were collected through 1) demographic recording form, 2) health literacy assessment scale for risk group with hypertension,        3) health behavior assessment scale for risk group with hypertension. Both scales were developed and revised by health education division (2018) as well as validated by experts. Scales were piloted for reliability with 30 people of risk group with hypertension yielding Cronbach alpha coefficient of .84 and .98 respectively. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and Pearson product moment Correlation Coefficient. Research results revealed that;

1. Level of health literacy among risk group with hypertension, Koh-Samui district, Surat Thani province covered 8 aspects including knowledge and understanding of health were at a wrong level(Mean=54, SD.= 1.79), Discrimination decision based on 3E 2S principle and information and health service based on 3E 2S principle, were at a medium level ( 99.05 and 97.62 percentage respectively), media literacy for health promotion based on 3E 2S principle were at a lowest level.(71.67 percentage)

2. Level of health behavior among risk group with hypertension, Koh-Samui district, Surat Thani province was at a medium level, including knowledge food consumption, exercise and stress management

3. Health behavior was significantly low related to knowledge of health literacy among risk group with hypertension, Koh-Samui district, Surat Thani province (p=.05)

Programs and activities to promote health literacy among risk group with hypertension, Koh-Samui district, Surat Thani province were applied to prevent disease progression and enhance quality of life.
