Abstract

Thailand's older population is 18% of the total population in the country. The number of older people with dementia is more than 651,950 people. Finding an older person with dementia thoroughly is essential for optimal care.

A research project on an integrated dementia care system according to the Thai social context of Suratthani Province was developed. The objective of the study was to explore the health status of the older by applying the principles of the World Health Organization (WHO), the development of integrated care for older people (ICOPE), and 6 aspects of intrinsic capacity. The participants consisted of older persons from 19 districts in Suratthani Province. The Basic Geriatric Screening (BGS), which is based on the standard of elderly health screening and assessment tools of the Ministry of Public Health including 9 areas: mobility, nutrition, vision, hearing, cognition, depression, urinary incontinence (UI), oral health, and Activities of Daily Living (ADL) was used to collect the data. Data were analyzed using numbers, percentages, and mean.

The results showed that 53,565 older people were screened, 57.09% were females, 42.9% were males, and 51.6% were aged 60-69. The mean age of the older was 71 years old. The most common types of disorders were cognition (29%), visual (12.9%), hearing (8.4%), UI (8.2%), nutrition (7.7%), ADL (5.8%), mobility (5.4%), oral health (2.4%) and depressive symptom (0.6%).

According to the study, the most common defect in intrinsic capacity was “cognition” which reflects the need for a dementia care system. An in-depth assessment of the problems and needs of the elderly in the area to design an integrated dementia care system will lead to the end goal of the community being able to sustainably care for the elderly with dementia and their caregivers.
