Abstract

This study is predictive research, which aims to study duration of breastfeeding among adolescent mothers in lower southern region and study the predictability of mother’s knowledge about breastfeeding and breastfeeding method, attitude and success on breastfeeding while in hospital, family support, health personnel support on duration of breastfeeding among adolescent mothers in lower southern region. The sample group consisted of adolescent mothers with normal births and children between the ages of 2 – 2.5 years old, 100 cases Data collection consisting of seven questionnaires, namely (1) personal information questionnaire (2) questionnaire for the only breastfeeding period of teenage (3) knowledge questionnaires about benefits of breast milk and breastfeeding methods (4) questionnaire for breastfeeding (5) questioning for success in breastfeeding while in hospital (6) family support questionnaires (7) support questionnaires from health personal. Check the content by 3 experts have tested the culmination of the 3rd tool by using the formula of Kuder-Richardson 20 (KR-20), the equality is .90 and test the accuracy of the tools that 4th-7th by Cronbach’s Alpha Coefficient. The reliability values were .85, .80, .90, and .93, respectively. Data were analyzed by using frequency distribution, percentage and standard deviation. The predictive factors were analyzed using multiple regression analysis. The results showed that

1. Exclusive breastfeeding of adolescent mothers found that the sample group has the longest breastfeeding period adolescent mothers at 3 month and the shortest at 2 month (M=3.89, SD.= .98)

2. The predictive variables were breastfeeding attitudes (ß= .46, t=5.96, p<.01), successful breastfeeding in hospital (ß= .34, t=3.48, p<.01), and breastfeeding support from family (ß= .20, t=2.12, p<.01) predict the duration of breastfeeding of adolescent mothers at 51 percent (R2= .511) with statistical significance (F (5,94)=19.64, p<.01).
