Abstract

This study aims to 1) create nursing innovations to promote breastfeeding for mothers after caesarean section and 2) evaluate the use of innovations. The sample consisted of 44 post-caesarean mothers, 44 relatives/caregivers of post-caesarean mothers, and 10 nurses who cared for post-caesarean mothers Maharaj Nakhon Si Thammarat Hospital, and was selected according to qualified-specific selection. The tools were an innovative Transverse Bed Sheet Support Breastfeeding, a Breastfeeding Effectiveness Assessment Tool, and an Innovation Satisfaction Assessment Form. The reliability was .87 by Cronbach’s alpha coefficient tested. Data were analyzed by percentage, average, and standard deviation. The results showed that:

This innovation can be used to support breastfeeding in mothers after caesarean section. 95.45% of mothers succeeded in breastfeeding before discharge. The overall innovation satisfaction was highest (Mean=4.83, SD.= .27). The average satisfaction of mothers, relatives/caregivers, and nurses were the highest, respectively. (Mean=4.82, SD.= .27, Mean=4.82, SD.= .32, and Mean=4.86, SD.= .22) The item with the highest average satisfaction was to keep the baby safe from falling out of bed, followed by helping mothers embrace their babies at the moment they returned from the operating room. The lowest average satisfaction from the assessment of mothers was the ease of use of innovation, and the assessment from relatives/caregivers and nurses was the beauty of innovation.

This study is about creating an innovative “Transverse Bed Sheet Support Breastfeeding” to promote breastfeeding in mothers after cesarean section. The limitation of use was the height of the baby pillow did not fit the level of the mother's breasts. Therefore, innovative designs of baby pillows should be developed in various sizes to suit mothers of different shapes so that they can be chosen appropriately.
