The Effect of Experiential Learning for Nursing Students with Applying 5A’s Behavior Change Model on Knowledge and Ability to Supporting Self-Management for People with Diabetes and Hypertension in the Community

Abstract

The purpose of this quasi-experimental research with a two-group pretest-posttest design was to examine the effect of experiential learning on nursing students by applying 5A’s behavior change model on knowledge and ability of self-management support (SMS) for people with diabetes and hypertension in the community. The samples consisted of 46 nursing students in 2nd-year; and matched paired selection into experimental and comparison groups, 23 persons each by average grade point (GPA). The experimental group participated in community nursing practice with an experiential learning method to apply 5A’s behavior change and PBRI’s models in SMS for people with diabetes and hypertension in the community for 5 weeks, the control group was a practical teaching using normal nursing procedures. The research instruments consisted of experiential learning handbook (index of item-objective congruence between .66 -1.00), knowledge quiz about SMS using 5A’s behavior change model (power of discrimination between .21 - .47, level of difficulty between .32 - .47), and SMS for people with diabetes and hypertension questionnaire (Cronbach’s Alpha Coefficient at .98). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-test.

The results revealed that after enrolling in the learning program, the mean scores of knowledge and SMS ability of the nursing students in the experimental group were higher those of before, and higher than the comparison group (p<.001).

From the results recommended to implement experiential learning methods with applying the 5A’s behavior change model to provide nursing students to be self-management supporter for people with diabetes and hypertension, and other chronic diseases.
