The Predicting Factor of Self Care Behavior in Cataract Patient Post Phacoemulsification in Maharaj Nakhon Si Thammarat Hospital

The purpose of this predictive relationship research is to study: 1) health beliefs and self-care behaviors of cataract patients, and 2) factors that predict self-care behaviors of cataract patients after undergoing intraocular lens implantation at Maharaj Nakorn Srithammarat Hospital. The study population consisted of cataract patients who had undergone intraocular lens implantation. The sample size was calculated to be 140 people using systematic random sampling. The research instrument used was a questionnaire, which was validated by 5 experts. The Item Objective Congruence (IOC) values ranged from 0.8 to 1.00, and the reliability coefficient was 0.80. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and stepwise regression analysis.
The research findings revealed that health beliefs were generally at a high level. (Mean=4.21, SD.=.34)The highest average scores were found in the areas of receiving information, followed by perceived benefits, perceived risks, motivation, and perceived severity, all of which were at a high level. (Mean=4.54, SD.= .47) On the other hand, the perception of barriers had the lowest average, falling in the moderate range. Regarding self-care behaviors of cataract patients, these were found to be at a high level. When analyzing the predictive factors, it was found that the perceived benefits of self-care, perception of barriers to self-care, perception of disease risk, and level of education (high school/vocational education) together predicted 31.3% (R² =0.313) of the variance in self-care behaviors, with statistical significance (p-value < 0.05).
Therefore, nurses in the wards related to cataract surgery should develop programs that help cataract patients understand the benefits of self-care, along with increasing awareness in other relevant areas simultaneously.
