Abstract

This quasi-experimental research was a study with a one group, employing a pre-test and post-test design. The objective of the study is to examine the effectiveness of a self-management support program on symptom management and the rate of recurrence in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) at Vibhavadi Hospital, Surat Thani Province. The research was conducted from April 1, 2024, to July 31, 2024. The sample group consisted of COPD patients with a history of more than two acute exacerbations per year, who received services at the outpatient department and emergency room of Vibhavadi Hospital, Surat Thani Province. The research instrument was an 8-week COPD exacerbation management program. Data were collected using a general information questionnaire, a symptom management ability questionnaire, and a hospital readmission record within 28 days. The research instruments were validated by three experts. The researcher collected the data personally and analyzed it using descriptive statistics, percentages, means, standard deviations, and a paired t-test to compare symptom management and recurrence rates. The results revealed that:

Symptom exacerbation management scores after the program were significantly higher than those before the program at the.01 level. The readmission rate of COPD patients was also shown to be reduced 31.75%.

The results of this study suggest that it is important for the nurses managing exacerbations in COPD patients to teach patients self-management strategies. This support will enable patients to better handle their breathing problems and thus increase their well-being and quality of life.
