Abstract

This descriptive study aimed to 1) examine oral health status among stroke patients, encompassing speech, lips, oral mucosa, tongue, gingiva, teeth, denture, saliva and swallowing 2) examine the association between oral health status and functional recovery outcomes as measured by NIHSS and Barthel ADL Index difference scores. The population consisted of 114 stroke patients in the rehabilitation phase who attended their first follow-up visit after discharge from WiangSa Crown Prince Hospital between May and August 2025. The research instruments used in this study were general information interview form, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), Barthel Activities of Daily Living Index (BI) and Modified Revised Oral Assessment Guide (Modified-ROAG). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, percentage, Pearson correlation, and independent t-test.

The research result showed that 1) stroke patients demonstrated moderate oral health status (Modified-ROAG Mean=2.33, SD.=1.64). More than half (54.4%) retained more than 20 teeth, while 48.25% had more than 4 posterior occluding pairs. 2) No significant correlation was observed between oral health status and functional recovery outcomes. These findings suggest that dental department should collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to implement comprehensive oral health care planning spanning from inpatient admission through home visits, while providing caregiver education and establishing dedicated referral pathways for stroke patients requiring dental treatment.
