This one-group pretest-posttest design study aimed to assess the effects of a health promotion program based on Health Belief Model, to raise awareness for health protective behaviors among waste collectors in Maung Municipality, Suratthani Province. The sample included 30 conveniently selected waste-collectors. Before and after participating in a health promotion program for 4 weeks, the samples completed a questionnaire and answered the interview questions asking them about their health beliefs and health behaviors. Cronbach's Alpha coefficient of the questionnaire and interview questions was .82 and .85, respectively.
Data were analyzed for frequency, mean, percentage, and standard deviation. Independent t-test was used to compare the mean score at before and after participating in the program.
The study revealed the following results. After program participation, the score was in a high level for perceived susceptibility to health problems from waste collection (Mean = 4.01, SD = 0.31) for perceived severity of having health problems due to waste collection (Mean 4.19, SD = 0.45) and for perceived benefits to disease prevention (Mean = 4.12; SD = 0.26). The score on awareness for disease prevention was in the highest level (Mean 4.26; SD = 0.23). The score of health belief after participating in the program (Mean 32.23, SD = 1.72) was higher than that before participating in the program (Mean = 28.50, SD =1.85) (p < .01).
Based on this study, in order to promote a quality of life of garbage collectors and workers in community professional nurses and healthcare team should be aware of certain health risks related to their work.
