The Relationship between Stress and Sleep Quality among the Elderly

Abstract

The aim of a correlative study was to find out the relationship between stress and sleep quality among the elderly. The samples of 234 elderly people were participated in the study. The research instrument consisted of 3 sections: 1) General information of participants, 2) Sleep quality, factor relating quality of life and sleep management questionnaires, 3) Stress test questionnaires. All questionnaires were approved content validity by 3 experts in the area of gerontology and using Cronbach’s Coefficient Alpha for analyzing the questionnaire reliability which were 0.83 and 0.92 respectively. All data were analyzed and reported in terms of frequency, percentage and using Point Biserial correlation statistic for find out the relationship between stress and quality of sleep.

The analysis results as follow:

1. The participants around 55.10 percentage had a good quality of sleep while the sample 44.9 around percentage had a bad quality of sleep (n=234).

2. The most participants reported the level of stress; 40.20 percentage reported a uncertainly feeling about the stress level (n=94), 38.90 percentage had no stress (n=91), 10.30 percentage had a mild level of stress (n=24), 3.80 percentage had a moderate level of stress (n=9) and 6.80 percentage had a high level of stress (n=16).

3. The stress was positively significantly related to the quality of sleep at a lower level (r=0.250, p<0.05)
