Effectiveness of a Pedometer-Based Physical Activity Promotion Program in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

This randomized controlled trial aimed to examine the effectiveness of a physical activity promotion program using a pedometer on physical activity levels and blood glucose control among patients with type 2 diabetes at Sichon Hospital, Sichon District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. The sample consisted of 70 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus attending the diabetes clinic. Participants were randomly assigned into an experimental group and a control group, with 35 participants in each group. The experimental group received a physical activity promotion program combined with pedometer use, counseling, and continuous follow-up for 12 weeks, whereas the control group received usual care. The research instruments were validated by three experts for content validity, and the questionnaire demonstrated a reliability coefficient of .82. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired sample t-test, and repeated-measures ANOVA.
The results revealed that, after the intervention, the experimental group showed significantly increased physical activity behavior, with the average daily step count increasing from 5,277.20 steps to 10,396.37 steps, which was significantly higher than that of the control group (p < .05). In addition, the experimental group demonstrated statistically significant reductions in body weight, body mass index (BMI), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), fasting blood sugar (FBS), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels (p < .05).
In conclusion, the physical activity promotion program was effective in improving physical activity behaviors and clinical outcomes among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
