Abstract

This study aimed to describe the care needs of persons with advanced heart failure in the new normal era using a descriptive phenomenological approach. The informant was a person with advanced heart failure who had been admitted to the cardiac intensive care unit of a university hospital in the southern region more than once in 6 months during the COVID-19 outbreak from 2020 to 2022. The informants were 12 patients who received treatment until their symptoms improved and they could take care of themselves at home. Data were collected between April and August 2022 using semi-structured interviews through video calls. Audiotapes were recorded during the interview. Interview transcriptions were analyzed using Colaizzi’s approach.

The findings showed the care needs of person with advanced-stage heart failure in the new normal era in 4 themes: 1) Need convenience and quick access to hospital services; 2) Need continuous monitoring via a phone or mobile application; 3) Need care and support from the family to live according to the physical conditions; and 4) Need to know the prognosis of the disease from the primary physician.

The results of this study can be empirical data to guide healthcare teams in developing care and services that meet the needs of persons with advanced-stage heart failure, especially the healthcare services in the new normal era.
