Abstract

Consumption of energy drinks has increased dramatically over the last four decades, particularly among laborers and adolescents. Energy drinks are aggressively marketed with the claim that they may have beneficial effects on physical and cognitive performances. In fact, several adverse health effects have been shown to be related to energy drink consumption. The wide variety of ingredients found in energy drinks can also be found in everyday foods we consume, for example caffeine, which can cause cardio-vascular and brain function diseases. Therefore, marketing of energy drinks, particularly marketing aimed toward adolescents should be limited or forbidden until independent research confirms product safety.
