Shallot
Main Article Content
Abstract
The shallot is a botanical variety (a cultivar) of the onion. Until 2010, the shallot was classified as a separate species, Allium ascalonicum, a name that is a synonym of Allium cepa, the species name of the onion. A. cepa is the correct name for the shallot species. Its close relatives include garlic, scallions, leeks, chives and the Chinese onion. Shallots probably originated in Central or Southwest Asia, travelling from there to India and the eastern Mediterranean.
