Background: Happiness in workplace was an important factor to make personnels create and gain productivity to achieve organizational goals.
Objective: To study the level of happiness in workplace of personnels working at outpatient departments, Ramathibodi Hospital and investigate relationship between demographic factors, working factors and the happiness in workplace of personnels.
Methods: Subjects were 328 staffs who have been working for a year or more. All 14 outpatient departments were Pediatric, Medicine, Surgery, Orthopedic, Family Medicine, Psychiatry, Obstetrics, Gynecology, Rehabilitation Medicine, Eye, Ear-Nose-Throat, Dental, Nuclear Medicine, and Skin. They consisted of 1) headnurse/nurse specialist/advanced practice nurse 2) registered nurse 3) assistant nurse and 4) ward clerk. The data were collected by using questionnaires that assessed the happiness in workplace. This happiness included life satisfaction, work satisfaction, positive affect and negative affect. Its reliability by Cronbach’s alpha coefficient which was 0.95. The data were analysed by using percentage, mean, standard deviation, chi-square, and odds ratio.
Results: Most of them were happy at high and medium level but low level was not found. The mean of positive affect was high level (mean = 4.10, SD = 0.54) and negative affect was high level as well (mean = 3.85, SD = 0.90). Life satisfaction and work satisfaction were the same level (mean = 3.73, SD = 0.64). Demographic factors including age, marital status, educational level, and working factors including position, type of employment and duration of work were not significantly correlated with their happiness.
Conclusions: On the way of Buddhism, personnels believe that caring the patients in hospital is merit so they feel happy and fulfill. It makes their life be valued from valued experiences. The result suggests that the position as expected and working environment are the elements would be promoted and improved to allow for more productivity and happiness.
