Abstract
Objective: To study the change in demographics and background characteristics of medical students at the
Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital from the academic years of 2006 – 2015 (B.E. 2549-2558). The analysis will
be beneficial for quality assurance in the EdPEx and WFME standards set by the Faculty.
Methods: The research is conducted through the study of the comprehensive profiles of first-year medical
students from the academic years of 2006-2015, gathered by Education Division, Siriraj Hospital. Analysis:
Through comparative analysis of frequency data from graphs and table charts of medical students’ background.
Results: The research shows a total number of medical students at the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital
at 2,785, from the academic years of 2006-2015. The total number of the male students was greater than the
female students, at 1,437 (51.60%) and 1,348 (48.40%) respectively. Their average high school GPA ranged from
4.00- 3.75 (88.54%). Most medical student’s parent held Bachelor’s Degrees (69.15% & 80.89%). The common
occupation of the fathers was civil service officer while that of the mothers was a business woman (21.32%
& 21.20%). The average household income was at 100,000 Baht per month (57.05%).
Conclusion: Despite the high levels in household income, education and high school GPA amongst the medical
students, there is still a significant number of students who do not fall into these categories. These students
need to be closely monitored to be provided with necessary financial and academic support.
