Abstract

Objective: To determine the prevalence and factors associated with working in the government sector among internists graduated from Siriraj Hospital.
Methods: The self-administered questionnaire was sent by postal mail to houses and working places of
internists graduated from Siriraj hospital during 2005 and 2009. The questionnaire included general demographic data, history of working places after graduation, reason of changing working places, history of scholarship for residency training.
Results: A total of 67 out of 167 internists sent back the answered questionnaires. Participants included 33
males and 34 females. The median age of the participants was 34 years (range, 31 to 42). The percentages of
persons who got a scholarship from government sector were more than those with free training (72% vs. 28%). The prevalence of working in the government sector during first 5 years after graduation was 87% to 90%. Getting a scholarship from government for residency training was significantly associated with working in the government sector during first two years after graduation (P<0.05). The rate of changing working place from government sector to private sector was 8.3% during first 5 years after graduation.
Conclusion: Internists who got a scholarship from government for residency training in internal medicine
would work in the government sector during first two years after graduation more commonly than those with free training significantly.
