Abstract

The surgical critically ill patients were found to be a higher risk for developing delirium. Several potential risk
factors have been reported including inadequate pain control, change of an environment and received some
medicine. There are often misunderstandings between patients with delirium and neurological disorders because
of the lack of effective assessment tools. Confusion Assessment Method-Intensive Care Unit (CAM-ICU) has been
shown to be an effective tool for delirium assessment. Non-pharmacologic intervention has been recognized to
effectively decrease the incidence and duration of delirium. However pharmacologic intervention can be used
in addition to the non-pharmacologic intervention in order to prevent and decrease the severity of delirium in
hospital.
