A Nurse’s Role in Oral Hygiene Care to Reduce Risks of Preterm Labor

Abstract
Periodontitis is one of the most important factors related to preterm labor. In order to reduce this serious problem, nurses in antenatal care unit are the first team who play a key role in screening oral health of pregnant women and assessing their oral health status. Maternal Oral Assessment is one of the valuable tools for investigating oral health problem in pregnant women. In addition, antenatal services provided by nurse can help referring pregnant women to proper dental care management, encouraging them to have routine dental checkup in the right time of pregnancy and giving the knowledge of oral care from the beginning of pregnancy to postpartum period. Moreover, nurses in antenatal care unit should support pregnant women and their families’ attitude towards benefit of oral hygiene care and treatment services during pregnancy, helping them to reduce risk of preterm labor.
