Abstract

De Quervain’s disease is an inflammation of the tendon sheath and the thumb tendon, causing pain and swelling on the thumb side of the wrist. The pain becomes more severe with thumb flexion and extension, leading to restricted motion and limited ability to use the thumb and wrist during activities such as writing and grasping objects. These limitations can significantly affect one’s daily life. If conservative treatment proves ineffective, surgery is an effective option for relieving pain. Perioperative nurses play a crucial role in ensuring that patients with De Quervain’s disease receive safe and effective surgical treatment. Their responsibilities begin in the preoperative phase, involving the assessment and preparation of patients both physically and psychologically, providing information about the condition, its symptoms, treatment options, and planning for nursing care. In the operating room, nurses continue to deliver nursing care and monitor for possible risks. Postoperatively, they educate patients about proper self-care at home, advise on follow-up, and help prevent complications, enabling patients to regain nearly normal hand function as quickly as possible.
