The Role of Outpatient Nurses in Caring for Pediatric Patients with Acyanotic Congenital Heart Disease
Main Article Content
Abstract
Acyanotic congenital heart disease is a chronic condition caused by structural abnormalities of the heart and blood vessels, which impair the function of the circulatory system without causing cyanosis. Acyanotic congenital heart diseases can vary ranging from no symptoms to signs of heart failure. Treatment consists of medication, surgery, and cardiac catheterization. In addition, proper self-care also helps promote better health and well-being for pediatric patients. Outpatient nurses play a critical role in the ongoing care of pediatric patients with acyanotic congenital heart disease. Their responsibilities begin with a thorough understanding of the disease’s pathophysiology, perform physical assessments, monitor vital signs, and evaluate symptoms to detect any signs of deterioration or complications. They play a role in educating the children’s caregivers about the disease, proper home care, medication adherence, and recognizing early symptoms of heart failure. Nurses also provide guidance on nutrition and oral health, which is essential in preventing infective endocarditis. They ensure the child receives recommended vaccinations, especially to prevent respiratory infections that could worsen cardiac symptoms. Developmental surveillance and support are also provided to help children reach appropriate milestones. Acting as care coordinators within a multidisciplinary team, outpatient nurses contribute to a comprehensive care plan that improves the child’s quality of life. This holistic approach supports both physical and emotional well-being, aiming to maintain stability and prevent complications.
